http://www.packettrap.com/network/Press-Releases/PacketTrap-Survey-Reveals-Top-Five-Pain-Points-for.aspx

SAN FRANCISCO--PacketTrap Networks, a leading provider of network monitoring and management software developed for Managed Service Providers (MSPs), today announced the results of a survey completed by 258 MSPs.

According to the survey, 83 percent of participants identified lack of visibility into network traffic as the number one pain point, with 75 percent stating a strong need for better granular traffic analysis software. More than 50 percent of respondents spent more than 13 percent of their time troubleshooting sluggish networks, which can be caused by client's employees surfing the Web for personal use, including bandwidth hogs such as YouTube.

"IT ESP is successful because we know what is going on with our client's networks at all times," said Shawn Slater from IT ESP, Inc. "A key part of our success is predicated on granular traffic analysis and custom alert capabilities, which allow us to see what is happening as it occurring so we can be proactive with our clients needs. Traffic analysis and custom alerts also support our efforts to transition from the traditional break-fix model to a more prosperous MSP business."

When survey respondents were asked the question, "Select the items that are top-of-mind issues for you as they relate to challenges you have with your customers,"

<dir><dir>

Moving assets to the cloud - 41 percent

Too many applications to manage - 37 percent

Managing / monitoring laptop fleets - 34 percent

Server management - 21 percent

</dir></dir>

MSPs responded to the PacketTrap survey during the month of July 2009 via email. They were asked questions about everything from current technologies implemented to long-term business goals. 60 percent stated their clients did not have storage, personal surfing or software download policies for their employees with most stating they were dissatisfied with their capabilities to monitor these areas. Unmonitored networks raise potential liability and performance issues for organizations and MSPs are responsible.

"It is apparent from the survey that there is a clear need for better network management software for MSPs, with traffic analysis capabilities being the most critical," said Steve Goodman, CEO of PacketTrap."PacketTrapMSP is the most advanced network management solution for the MSP market. Its remote monitoring and management capabilities allow MSPs to prevent problems before they occur so they can add real value to their clients."

In addition, PacketTrap will have access to Ingram Micro’s vast sales and marketing resources.

"To increase our market share, we partnered with Ingram Micro because they are recognized as the market leader and they offer us the opportunity to reach thousands of their MSPs and resellers," said Steve Goodman, Chief Executive Officer of PacketTrap Networks. "Because our products are developed specifically for the mid-market, Ingram Micro was an obvious fit due to their superior service and support to the value-added resellers that serve our target market."

http://www.packettrap.com/network/Press-Releases/PacketTrap-Daily-Downloads-Increase-100-.aspx

Demonstrating PacketTrap's sensitivity to tight budgets, the Company recently released a new version of its free set of network management tools, pt360. Hailed as the market's most comprehensive set of free network management tools, pt360 includes network scan, SNMP scanning, TFTP server monitoring, and port and MAC scans. In addition, a free 21-day trial for Cisco configuration tools, NetFlow collector and PacketTrap’s popular switch port mapper is available.

"Clearly 2009 is going to be a tough year for everyone, IT departments included," said Steve Goodman, CEO of PacketTrap Networks. "PacketTrap's free software allows us to provide solutions that solve the most frustrating network management challenges despite budget challenges, and helps us build long-term relationships with the network engineers who are using our tools."

Also contributing signficiantly to the dramatic increase in PacketTrap software downloads is the free trial of the Company's revolutionary ptFlow Traffic Analysis tool. Industry experts estimate that 80% of corporate networks include devices that don't support industry-standard protocols such as NetFlow, sFlow®, and J-Flow. ptFlow converts standard network packets into the NetFlow protocol format as long as the device supports span mirroring, port mirroring, or port replication. The information provided by ptFlow enables network engineers to quickly identify bandwidth hogs, re-allocate bandwidth requirements, and quantify network performance utilization with little effort.

Traffic analysis data is critical for engineers to locate bandwidth hogs, capacity constraints, service degradation and other network faults. Traditionally, only costly devices that adhered to industry standard protocols such as IPFIX, NetFlow, sFlow® or J-Flow have been able to provide this type of information. With ptFlow, network engineers can receive detailed traffic analysis data for any network router or switch that supports port replication or mirroring. By leveraging packet sniffing technology, ptFlow recognizes and documents network traffic data and then presents it in intuitive monitoring dashboards that are part of PacketTrap’s network management platform, Perspective.

The Need for Traffic Analysis

Over 80% of network devices in production environments are generic and do not support standard protocols that enable IT administrators to perform traffic analysis. As a result, problems that affect network efficiency and end-user experience are difficult to locate.

ptFlow solves this problem by:

converting standard network packets to the NetFlow protocol format

displaying them in the ptFlow Perspective dashboard

monitoring packets as they traverse the network

allowing users to identify high-traffic websites

minimizing impact of streaming media on the network

This allows the IT administrator to re-allocate bandwidth requirements and quantify network performance utilization with a minimum amount of effort. ptFlow ensures IT departments are maximizing their revenue contribution and quality of service at the lowest possible cost.

“We believe traffic analysis is directly tied to an IT department’s contribution to revenue generation and the control of operating costs,” said Steve Goodman, CEO of PacketTrap. “With ptFlow, network engineers can understand network traffic patterns and how they are impacting the overall IT infrastructure so organizations can operate more efficiently and effectively.”

One of the most pressing issues facing IT departments today is building a scalable network that provides fault tolerance, security and quality of service. Not only do IT departments need to account for the growth in the number of users on the network, they also need to handle new technologies, applications, protocols, requirements and the growing number of remote offices. This paper, authored by PacketTrap’s Product Management Team, addresses these issues by presenting information about best practices in network management, including network infrastructure design and network maintenance. Specifically, the paper helps IT professionals design, implement and manage products that traditionally were not part of the network infrastructure, including VoIP, power over Ethernet, Wi-Fi, VPN and general security.

“Scalable networks and the disruptive technologies being placed on them are problems plaguing network managers,” said Matt Bolton, VP Products. “As a technology leader, PacketTrap is making solutions available to enable our customers to build secure, easy-to-manage, comprehensive networks that can handle the new technologies and demands being placed on them. We developed this white paper to provide information on how planning and implementing these networks can be done smoothly and effectively.”

When one of our customers told us he had just recently purchased a very expensive network management solution and subsequently shelved it because it was too complicated, we decided to survey other IT managers to see how often this happens

The PacketTrap survey polled more than 5600 IT decision-makers at businesses with 250-5,000 employees. The survey found that 54 percent of total respondents indicated they did not have a network management system at all. Of these respondents, most used a combination of open source, free tools and individual tools acquired from smaller vendors. Sixty-five percent were in the market for a network management solution due to the increasing complexity of their networks driven by VoIP, SaaS, virtualization, and other emerging technologies.

Of the respondents that had a network management system, 64 percent would consider technologies from an alternative network management vendor in the future. The top reasons driving organizations to consider moving to an alternative provider included feature set (52 percent), service and support (53 percent) and price (37 percent).

Survey respondents indicated that alternative vendors offer comprehensive solutions that are less complex, scalable and provide more visibility. These vendors typically provide greater price-performance value for the functionality offered, making it easier for customers to squeeze more out of their budgets.

The online survey consisted of 10 multiple choice questions. Respondents consisted primarily of IT administrators, network engineers and system administrators at companies with less than 5,000 employees. The survey spanned multiple verticals, including technology, healthcare, government and education.

The network administrator from the world's largest enterprise software company based in Redwood Shores, CA states, "We have an incredibly complicated network that includes an endless number of devices. Until we implemented pt360, those devices were difficult to manage. Now it's very easy for me to track and test how much stress is being placed on any one device to help me decide where the choke points are and which devices need to be replaced. What used to take me all day now takes me minutes."

"In a very short amount of time, tens of thousands of network engineers have made pt360 PRO a part of their daily lives," said Steve Goodman, CEO of PacketTrap Networks. "What drives this high level of usage is the visibility pt360 provides, the depth and breadth of its tools and the simplicity of its design."

Switch Port Mapper allows network administrators and engineers to quickly identify the location of specific devices. PacketTrap's Switch Port Mapper determines which devices are connected to each port on a switch or hub. The tool saves users time and effort by gathering additional key data such as device name, port speed, and status, in one integrated tool.

NetFlow Listener gives IT system administrators/engineers knowledge of real-time network behavior and how traffic impacts the network's overall health. Specifically, NetFlow Listener actually captures flow data from continuous streams of network traffic and converts raw data into useful charts, tables and tree hierarchy that quantify exactly how the corporate network is being utilized.

Cisco Configuration is a central repository for Cisco router configuration and allows users to edit, upload, download and backup IOS configuration files. It also automatically compares the running to the startup configuration, color-coding the results for quick and efficient viewing. PacketTrap's pt360 PRO's Cisco Configuration also decrypts any 7-key router password.

Traffic Jam is a random traffic generator for the WAN. Packet size, circuit bandwidth and load percentage are variable as well as customizable. Traffic Jam bombards WAN pipes and links with specified loads of random packets to measure network performance under known load conditions. It can be used to simulate the latency issues, jitter, high loss and drop rates experienced under peak usage conditions for critical applications and thus allows for solving small problems before they grow into large, costly problems.

PacketTrap's pt360 Network Management solution was released Nov. 27, 2007 and has received tremendous acclaim for its first-to-market integration of diagnostics tools with monitoring. The pt360's intuitive centralized dashboard, ease of implementation, integrated network monitoring and diagnostic tools and lack of bells and whistles differentiates it from the competition. The network management solution's support for open source tools, such as Nagios and Cacti, has been an equal contributor to the product's early momentum.

PacketTrap is at an advantage because its approach to network management completely distinguishes it from what exists today
"Excellent design and execution. I am participating in the Beta program to improve upon what has been done," said Douglass Elliott, IT Director for Euro RSCG. "pt360 is already close to providing what most data centers need for network monitoring and troubleshooting without demanding additional cost for un-needed capabilities. I would highly recommend this product for usage. It baffles me that no one has been able to consolidate usable network tools like this before PacketTrap."

"PacketTrap is at an advantage because its approach to network management completely distinguishes it from what exists today," said Steve Goodman, CEO of PacketTrap Networks. "We feel the pain of IT departments caused by increasingly cumbersome technologies and decreasing budgets. We envision a solution that puts important network management tools at the fingertips of administrators, which to us, means one-click, drag and drop, unmatched dataflow and low cost. The beta program will tell us what features and functionalities we need -- making them manageable and easy to use is up to us."

At the end of this month, PacketTrap Networks will open its v1.1 beta program to the public. The purpose of the beta program is to determine what features and functions are needed for future releases. Parties interested in the public beta program can go to www.PacketTrap.com/download to participate.
Further 65% of respondents using integrated tool suites say they keep the application open "almost constantly," as compared to "almost never," "once a month," "once a week," or "once a day." Integrated tool suite users also said they believe there are significant time-saving measures associated with integrated tool suites. Only 56% of respondents prefer bundled tool suites over individual tools, 40% of which access the bundled tool suite "once a week." Thirty-nine percent of respondents said they prefer individual tools to solve network problems, accessing those tools only when necessary.

Network engineers have been abused for too long with disparate point tools and a lot of the solutions out there now are claiming they are complete toolkits but in reality, they are just a list of tools bundled together
Ninety-two percent of respondents said they found PacketTrap's pt360 Network Management Tool Suite extremely useful.

"We keep PacketTrap's dashboard on all day. We keep it on a large-screen LCD monitor, wall-mounted in our office to monitor critical systems," said Terry Sherb, CIO of California Hospital Association.

The Top 3 Tools
Rated top tool category was server monitoring tools, which poll each server on the network for current status and session statistics on CPU, memory, deep resources, availability and response time of services, network traffic, and maintenance scheduling. Server monitoring was rated the most popular tool, with 52% of respondents stating they use it constantly. Application monitoring, a tool that monitors and provides current session statistics on network application connectivity, availability, usage, performance, speed, read-write activity, log activity, and other indicators, was rated second, with 40% stating they use it constantly. Netflow analyzer tools, a netflow tool that monitors Cisco IOS NetFlow and IPFIX information and provides real-time and session reporting on traffic activity and deep packet inspection, was rated third, with 39% saying they use it constantly.

"Network engineers have been abused for too long with disparate point tools and a lot of the solutions out there now are claiming they are complete toolkits but in reality, they are just a list of tools bundled together," said Steve Goodman, CEO of PacketTrap. "The takeaway from the survey is that IT departments want to solve their network problems with the least amount of hassle as possible, and we believe that our solution, the pt360, does just that."

San Francisco, CA. PacketTrap Networks, a leading provider of free network management software solutions, announced today that Pache Pod, the premier purveyor of specialty coffees and drinks, relies on the pt360 Network Management Tool Suite (pt360) to maintain the health of their network and to manage hardware and software systems within their mobile shops.

"Networks aren't perfect and they are subject to all types of failures," said Angela Pace, CEO of Pache Pod. "I need my network up and running not only during business hours, but at all times. PacketTrap's monitoring capabilities help us stay on top of the network and its diagnostic tools allow us to proactively prevent any errors that may occur -- we see it as a good way to keep our business running smoothly."

Pache Pod favors web-based open source applications such as Cacti and Nagios, which the company spent significant time and effort customizing to their very specific needs. The company also uses commercial network management tools but was tired of managing and supporting disparate tools, which lacked integration and required significant cost, time and effort. The company selected PacketTrap's pt360 because the solution includes network monitoring and diagnostic tools in a single, user-friendly environment that supports open source technologies. Pt360 provides a complete view of the network and allows users to monitor all the components running on it, connected to it, tapping its resources and using it as a means of transfer.

"pt360 provides a complete view of the network so users can accurately and adequately manage IT services and improve the performance of applications, and ultimately, the entire business," said Steve Goodman, CEO of PacketTrap.

"Using the pt360 DNS audit tool, I was able to instantly spot a bunch of incorrect entries in my DNS server, missing pointer records and stale reverse DNS data," said Steve Kennedy, CTO for Pache Pod. "The tool helped me proactively fix a bunch of problems that would have otherwise become minor nagging issues for lots of users on my network."
