You’ve probably seen posts on this blog mentioning SpiceWorks, a company predicated on an advertising model to offer a free SaaS (hosted) web-based network management product for small businesses. In a post less than a month ago we mentioned that we didn’t think it could last. That is, we felt they either were collecting free download users purely to sell the user community to a larger Network Management vendor or they were positioning to start selling the product via a subscription. Well, it’s happened.
SpiceWorks recently announced that they are now offering a $10 / month solution for their network management software to those customers that don’t want to see the ads. Is this a slippery slope towards charging customers for their products?
