Feb 29th, 2008: Electricity and Network Discovery

February 29th, 2008 3 Comments

I recently read an article were the CTO of a web 2.0 company said that IT infrastructure was becoming like electricity. He said he doesn’t worry about IT infrastructure at all, that he just plugs into the cloud and really doesn’t care about what’s going on in it. He said that all their application development is done by “plugging in” and all their systems are hosted. He said that the Internet is getting close to the level of abstraction as electricity is to the home user. The home user doesn’t have to understand the origin of electricity, the grid, or how it turns on their TV. They just plug in. Likewise a CTO doesn’t have to really know much about IT, which means, in theory, companies like PacketTrap will likely vanish from the earth.

Something tells me that network discovery, needing a TFTP server, network diagnostics, and vulnerability scanning will always be required. Not to mention monitoring pipes between offices, your Exchange servers, and of course your mission critical applications. With the fast paced adoption of disruptive technologies like VoIP, virtualization, and SaaS, you’ll have plenty of work to do for a while.

In fact, in all likelihood that CTO will lose his job way before you do.

The pt360 PRO launches in four days.

    Steve, your blogs are getting progressively more ridiculous. First the dwarves, then the decades old Windows joke (do you realize you insulted half of your customer base?), and now you’re basically saying anyone who uses a co-lo facility or MSP is an idiot? Are you really that ignorant of how IT departments really work?

    @darius –

    you’ll also notice in the next post he actually insulted himself. “engineers are smarter than business folks.” Clearly Goodman is into self deprecating humor and his blog is more of a ‘lighter look at network management’ – see the blog title. His background is IT so in essence he is making fun of himself and everyone. You’ll also notice some very odd customer quotes on their main website. I think their company’s personality is refreshing in this sea of run of the mill non-differentiated vendors. You need to lighten up a bit, and relax.
